Oh my God I didn't even know that?? I wasn't sure you could get that companion thing to happen that far after you get Lucanis, so I never even saw that happen. Are you fucking kidding me?
ENDGAME SPOILERS BELOW
I know that the writers had said that for his death in endgame they were "wondering what would make it more impactful" like they hadn't written an compelling enough character to stand on his own and for his death to be devastating. They said that the reason it was as impactful was because of Assan specifically dying too. Which is complete and utter fucking horseshit, but with the fandom's reaction to him I'm not surprised they felt the need to do that.
However the fact that they actually just fucking made Lucanis' gift to him about Assan just really irks me. How do they expect the fans to treat him like a character outside of his pet/son/thing if the other companions don't? Yes the other companions have quite a bit of party banter with him outside of talking about assan, but I guarantee you that most players are not really taking Davrin with them enough to hear most of it.
I'm actually begging developers and fans to treat POC characters like people
Y'all I love Assan, don't get me wrong. He's a little sweetheart and I cherish him. However, the way a lot of y'all reduce Davrin down to just "Assan's Dad"™ is so fucking annoying. It's almost to the point where I wish Assan didn't exist as a character.
I've seen people try and say that Davrin "doesn't have a personality outside of caring for Assan" which is just... Completely wrong. He's extremely multifaceted from his care for Assan, to his dedication to the Wardens, to his love of the hunt, to his borderline paranoia that he's going to either die a hero or outlive his friends, to his self-destructive view of himself in a relationship, and even just how he treats Rook and the other companions.
What's even stranger to me is that he is 100% the guy that would like dom you but he gets no attention. If you asked him to he would probably degrade you because he knows you like it. He would probably be controlling, and manhandle you, and all of that shit that people (especially straight women) in fandom thirst over to the point of mischaracterising other characters for it. And yet I see almost no one talk about him outside of Assan and like "ooo I ship him with Lucanis because enemies to lovers and I can only think about Davrin in relation to other characters!"
And you know what. I'm just gonna come out and say it. I genuinely think it's because he's black. That's it. He's a fucking amazing character, and is the exact type of guy so many people would thirst over. But because he's black it's crickets. Pull yourselves together.

Feel free to ignore this bc i know the topic is annoying but i was wondering about hbomberguy’s video criticizing rwby… did he admit that he made shit up for that or just flat out didn’t even watch rwby? I feel like I’ve seen that said before but never knew if it was true or if maybe I’m misremembering
Honestly i feel hypocritical for never having watched that video myself but also i try not to engage with shit i know will piss me off. The same can’t be said for 99% of the people who won’t shut up about how much they think rwby sucks 🙄
i don't think he's ever admitted to anything - the level of ego it takes to prostrate yourself as a media critic when all he does is make character attacks against the creators that he knows he can get away with (the weird parasocial dogging on Miles and Kerry, implicating them as paedophiles at one point if i recall correctly. an early version of the video having him shitting on Barbara for a tweet she made telling people not to watch the show if they don't like it that was only removed when viewers pointed out that she'd tweeted that in a specific context - that she and Arryn had been tagged in a fucked up edit of their characters stabbing each other by an asshat in the hatedom - which showcases either his poor research abilities that he didn't look further into that or that he knew and didn't care as it was an opportunity to attack someone else until he found out that the context was known and he couldn't get away with it) doesn't leave much room for self-reflection
i'm in the same boat - i don't watch shit that pisses me off because outrage bait rots your brain and i have better things to do with my life than watch that pretentious turnip lie about shit he doesn't like
from what i do know he misrepresents certain aspects of the show (calls Sun white at one point), makes clear he doesn't pay attention in other parts (claims the 'dust robbery plotline' was dropped and left unresolved when it wasn't). oh and he lies. a lot.
about Monty specifically - because he presents himself as having been a fan of Monty, disappointed that the show was dragged down by Miles and Kerry specifically (and makes it clear he thinks everyone else who works on the show is too talented to be wasting their time on it). and dedicated the video in Monty's memory
except he fucking hated Monty when he was alive, and we know this because of posts he'd made on the somethingawful forums about six months before Monty's death where he shits on Monty, shows blatant contempt for everything Monty had ever done, seems to just not respect anyone who engages in fandom (weird distaste for people who write fanfic, make fanart, cosplay) and throwing everything he says in that video into doubt because he's blatantly lying about having been a fan of the man
and you know why? it's the same reason his Sherlock video primarily focuses on shitting on Moffat and doesn't call much attention to Mark Gatiss's contributions. because it's bad for Hbomb's image to attack a dead man or a gay man - regardless of why he's criticising them

Techno and Wilbur not being brothers is so important to me you have no idea
Because them being Tommy's older brothers doesn't actually ever overlap. Wilbur acts as Tommy's brother through most of the stuff with L'Manburg, for better and usually for worse. Then once he's gone and Tommy's lost everyone he finds a new older brother in Techno.
Techno and Wilbur aren't brothers though. When they interacted they were friends at best, and tense at worst. Even if their goals do eventually line up, Wilbur still stabs Techno in the back. He promised destruction for Manberg, before setting up Tommy as a potential leader. He said he was down with anarchy but failed to properly condemn the very governments Technoblade's anarchy-based morality is centered around.
He realized that governments were the cause of all of his problems, but failed to see the bigger picture in regards to how L'Manburg had hurt everyone on the server. One of Wilbur's consistent problems is a failure to see how his actions effect those around him, or to act with a blatant disregard for consequences. And at the point that Technoblade came into his life, there wasn't really much hope for them to ever be the family they could've been.
Wilbur never cared about Techno as a person. He just saw him as
The Blade
An Anarchist
The Revolution
Wilbur knew that without Technoblade he didn't have a revolution and yet he was still willing to disregard Techno's fundamental ideals because he was too narrow minded to see anything else. Too focused on how L'Manburg hurt him, his L'Manburg, and the damage it caused his life. He barely thought of how Techno would feel in regards to his decision.
Techno's just another person Wilbur managed to burn before his death. He wasn't the last.
And when Tommy shows up in the floorboards of Techno's house a month later, after L'Manberg has exiled him and Techno has nearly lost everything to tyranny, and he has a hope that maybe this time things will be better. Tommy's young, still learning, and he's been through a lot at the hands of corrupt men wielding power.
Maybe this time Techno can have someone agree with his ideals and actually stick to it.
He humors Tommy, shelters him, but treats him as he'd treat anybody. Tommy's a nuisance, and Techno might yell at him for taking his stuff for the third time this week, but he'll never kick Tommy out. Not after he's been abandoned to this extent. Not after Tommy has suffered the hand he was nearly dealt at his botched execution.
Techno almost lost everything. Tommy did lose everything.
Techno becomes an older brother figure to a scared and grieving and traumatized Tommy, a wounded child grasping onto the last straws of normalcy he has as he watches everything he's ever known slip through his finger tips. Techno is willing to take Wilbur's place, to act as a role model to Tommy during hard times. To stay strong and teach him important values to carry through future hardships in life. Techno wants so badly for Tommy to be a proper younger brother to him.
And then he makes the same mistake his brother made.
Tommy disregards Techno.
In his desperate attempt to hold onto those strands of normalcy Tommy reaches for something he's always known in favor of the potential chaos of Techno. Tommy is trying to stick to what he knows, what he used to have, to Tubbo, to his discs, to anything that reminds him of all he's lost so he can feel like he has it back. He fails to see that Techno could have been a source of that familiarity, that Techno was trying to be the island of stability while he was crashing in the waves.
Instead Tommy takes Tubbo's outstretched hand and climbs into the lifeboat they've always been floating in together, not realizing that in doing so he has awakened a great storm that will leave him with less than he had before.
In the immediate comfort of familiarity Tommy fails to realize the consequences of his own actions, and proves that in spite of all the posturing he's done about changing, about growing, about being a bigger and better man, he's a frightened child with the worst habits of his family.
When Tommy stabs Techno in the back, he reopens an old wound
After all, those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it

one of these days i will drop an essay abt how there's actually no objectively correct characterization of any gen1 characters because they are, when in their most un-filtered state, supposed to be the streamers that play them, and to assume we know basically anything about who those people are is to miss the point of the social experiments entirely. and none of you are ready

scary that there's still Will bowlcut haters around. like... that's his core character design, it looks nice too. sorry to all the different hairstyle enjoyers out there but Will without a bowlcut simply wouldn't be Will to me. that's the side effect of them doubling down on that one single hairstyle for 8 years. they can style it different or make it messier sure, but he needs Some version of a bowlcut otherwise who is that
#Duffers did it to themselves#if they'd change the haircut Now i'll call the s5 hair department a flop no hesitation#not because it would look bad but simply because That's Not My Will that's just noah schnapp with a wig#also unrelated side tangent ik this is just about silly hcs but anytime i talk about Will's hair i get annoyed about how the#bowlcut became the minion meme equivalent of the fandom#i simply refuse to believe people actually hate bowlcuts that much that has to be some kind of moist phenomenon#i've never in my life seen someone irl make fun of bowlcuts or personally even noticed one as 'strange'#but go online and there's apparently consensus that bowlcuts are cringe or something? lmao?#you can probably imagine how surprised i was when i found the st fandom for the first time and everyone just kept talking about Will's hair#when it's literally a normal ass haircut#and meanwhile no one realized that Mike also had a bowlcut for 3 seasons. i swear 'Will bowlcut lmaoo' just became a meme#i'm convinced half of these people don't even know what a bowlcut looks like since they apparently can't recognize one#side tangent over this had nothing to do with what people are talking about actually 😭#my furstration about the way a fucking haircut out of all things became the funny stinger of the show apparently never goes away#and comes back out any time i type the word hair.... oh well#ignore the tags i was having a moment (flashback having nothing to say after a show besides 'the hairrr 😭')

I'm not gonna elaborate because I don't want to, but I wish we could have genuine and well-argued criticism of critrole. I want my n1 fave to be criticised for its flaws. alas, most critique I see is either pretty badly argued or it's done in bad faith.

okay I actually drafted this post and didn't wanna post it but now I'm kinda twitching
Bioware drops minor 'spoilers' (mentions of what's going on on the larger scale of things half of which we already could infer from Tevinter Nights already) - how dare they.
Bioware apparently notices that some people are unhappy with even the most minor exposition and someone genuinely warns that there's more to come and if you're one of those people you'll probably want to tune out the entirety of it all - how dare they and that person in particular!
Like? I'm sorry, I guess I get the frustration if you want to be clean-clean, but there's only so many generic phrases that they could say without mentioning anything? At this point, like, the only thing they didn't show is CC - and then I guess, what, shut up till October?
But then when they do go quiet they get backlash for showing too little like in the 'companions week'. THAT was the level of exposure you want?
Dropping little hints and mentions of what's going on so that people can go 'holy shit what?!' and 'oh I wanna see what comes next!' and 'well dammit now I have to know' is a HUGE part of marketing. Like???
Like what else is there to show without showing anything. More screenshots? More generic descriptions of personalities? More combat out of context? Simply saying 'it's gonna be SO cool you guys'? Come on.
I mean I've been warned that the discourse(tm) will come back, but I didn't expect it to start from THIS. From people bullying creators off the Internet for a fair warning. Hello???
Lifting the embargo a month and a half before release is a very weird choice, I agree and I don't defend that one. But even with that aside, even with only just what was shown in gameplay reveals and such, people are being weird.
If you don't want to see or hear ANYTHING that could cue you in on what's going on - then it's on you to not watch or read shit (provided that it's tagged). I'm sorry.

This is totally not in reference to anything anyone has posted, but man imagine thinking you know someone's characters better than the person themself. Imagine if you were just vibing with your literal OCs who you made, and some random person comes up to you and goes "UMMMM ACTUALLY your OCs would NEVER act like that because I think they'd act like THIS!" and then they get mad at YOU for not going "oh you're so right, how could I forget I put you in charge of MY OCs?".
Just a little observation, y'know?

the problem about celebrities who date problematic people is that even in the off chance they part ways, you can never see that person in the good light shown previously (always speaking through social lenses obviously) and always wonder deep down if those hideous beliefs thrown around are actually endorsed by them as well behind closed doors
